Donation to Bob Cook Games

Last night (19th March) Lion President Keith Mead visited Chippenham Lions Club where he presented a cheque to Lion Derek Angell for £500 on behalf of Melksham Lions in support of the Bob Cook Games.

The event, organised by Chippenham Lions Club is backed by Lions Clubs throughout District 105W and was the idea of Chippenham Lions Charter President, the late Bob Cook who died in 1988.

The games, first held at Melksham, are now staged at Swindon’s County Ground athletics track and bowling green.

MELKSHAM LIONS DONATE

President Keith Mead last night made donations to two most worthy causes.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance  – Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a registered charity which relies almost entirely on public donations to keep flying. We have been supporting them now for many years – since  the ’90s –  and it was my pleasure to continue that tradition by presenting them with a cheque for £300.

Pictured with our President is Stewart Ackland who received our cheque on behalf of Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

Melksham Christmas Lights Committee – Colossal amounts of work by just a few local people make Melksham the brightest town around. Every single person who works on the lights is a volunteer, meaning every single penny donated to them is spent on making Melksham lights bigger and better each year. We have been supporting them for many years now so it was my pleasure to continue that tradition by presenting them with a cheque for £200.

MELKSHAM LIONS CLUB celebrate at the Palace for Lions Clubs International Centenary

The Lions Clubs of the British Isles are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs International: 100 years of proud service to our communities.

We are delighted that our Patron, HRH, The Countess of Wessex G.C.V.O. will be hosting a Reception at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, 28th February to help Lions Clubs mark this milestone.

Simon White (MJF) will be representing Melksham Lions Club and will be joining with members from across the British Isles at the Centenary Reception together with the organisations’ charity partners.

Melksham Lions Club help our local community through fund-raising and organising events such as Easter and Christmas Parties at our local temporary accommodation unit.

Lions Clubs International support major projects that address diabetes, youth, the environment, hunger relief, childhood cancer and sight issues affecting communities throughout the world

Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) Awards are given out to members by their fellow Club members in recognition of their outstanding service to both the Lions Club and the local community.

Pictured above with me are three of our members who it was felt were well deserving of such an award.

Due to some rather unforeseen circumstances it was not possible to make all three presentations at the same time.

It was my pleasure to present two of the three awards at our Christmas dinner held on 5th December 2017; these being to:

Simon White – a Charter member of Melksham Lions Club who has served the Club for over 44 years. During this time he has been President 8 times and is currently Chair of our activities committee.

Jim Whyborn – a Lion of over 14 years with the last 7 being with Melksham Lions Club. During his time with Melksham Lions he was President for 2 years and is currently Chair of our welfare committee.

It therefore gave me much pleasure at our meeting last night to present the third and final Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) Award to:

Cliff Terrell – a member of Melksham Lions Club for over 37 years. During this time he was President for a year – but most significantly Treasurer for 27 years.

Childrens Christmas Party

Yesterday as we hosted a children’s Christmas party at Melksham’s Temporary Accommodation unit – Father Christmas was able to pop in and hand out a few gift bags to each of the children.

The children were entertained for the duration of the party by a friend of Melksham Lions – Dave Hickory – a well known children’s entertainer, magician and Balloon man.

We also laid on a comprehensive food table which was much appreciated by the children and parents alike.

At the end of the party the children were given a chocolate selection box courtesy of Alison Peacock of  McCarthy & Stone Retirement Lifestyle’s Ltd.
