Lions Deliver a New Lifeline on Two Wheels

Melksham Lions Club is delighted to announce the successful completion of a two-year fundraising campaign that has raised an incredible £16,000 for the Freewheelers Blood Bike Service.

The funds will enable the charity to purchase a new blood bike, helping its dedicated volunteer riders continue their vital work transporting blood, medical samples, patient notes, X-rays, breast milk, and other essential supplies between hospitals across the South West.

Freewheelers provides this invaluable service free of charge to the NHS and relies entirely on volunteers. Every night, their riders help ensure that critical medical items reach where they are needed most, while also supporting local air ambulance bases.

This achievement is one that everyone at Melksham Lions Club is immensely proud of. What began as an idea from Lion and keen motorcyclist Simon White in 2024 grew into a club-wide mission that captured the imagination and support of our local community.

Over the past two years, funds have been raised through a variety of events and activities, including our popular Santa Float collections, Easter hamper raffles, car boot sales, and many other fundraising initiatives. Every donation, no matter how large or small, helped bring us closer to our goal.

Reaching £16,000 is a fantastic achievement and demonstrates what can be accomplished when a community comes together behind a worthwhile cause. We would like to thank everyone who supported the campaign, attended our events, volunteered their time, or made a donation.

A cheque presentation was held at a recent Lions meeting, and we look forward to seeing the new blood bike purchased and put into service.

While we are proud of the amount raised, we are even prouder of the difference it will make. Knowing that this bike will help support patients, hospitals, and emergency services across the region makes all the hard work worthwhile.

This is a wonderful example of Lions serving their community — and a reminder that together, we really can make a difference.

As Lions, we are proud to serve our community, and this project shows just how much can be achieved when people come together for a common cause.

On Monday (26th March) an Easter Party and Egg hunt was hosted by Melksham Lions at the Kingsbury Square temporary accommodation hostel in Melksham

Thanks go out again to Dave Hickory – local Children’s Entertainer, Magician and Balloon Modeller who kindly gave up his time to keep the children entertained.

Also a big thanks to two “Friends of Lions” Rachel and Ralph who helped – a lot – with the Easter Egg Hunt

Melvin Jones Fellowship Awards

Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) Awards.

Pictured above are – left to right – Simon White, Cliff Terrell, Jim Whyborn and

President Keith Mead.

__________________________________________________________

Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) Awards are given out to members by their fellow Club members in recognition of their outstanding service to both the Lions Club and the local community.

Pictured above with me are three of our members who it was felt were well deserving of such an award.

Due to some rather unforeseen circumstances it was not possible to make all three presentations at the same time.

It was my pleasure to present two of the three awards at our Christmas dinner held on 5th December 2017; these being to:

Simon White – a Charter member of Melksham Lions Club who has served the Club for over 44 years. During this time he has been President 8 times and is currently Chair of our activities committee.

Jim Whyborn – a Lion of over 14 years with the last 7 being with Melksham Lions Club. During his time with Melksham Lions he was President for 2 years and is currently Chair of our welfare committee.

It therefore gave me much pleasure at our meeting last night to present the third and final Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) Award to:

Cliff Terrell – a member of Melksham Lions Club for over 37 years. During this time he was President for a year – but most significantly Treasurer for 27 years.

Melksham Christmas Market

Melksham Lions were again at the annual Christmas Market, which preceded the major event in the town of switching on the Christmas Lights.

You were again generous in your support of our Lions Tombola Stall, funds from which go directly towards enabling us to continue our support of our local community.

We would like to thank everybody for their continued and generous support over the year and:-

WISH EVERYONE A HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR
