What Are Lions Clubs?
Lions Clubs are the world’s largest service club organisation comprising 46,000 clubs and over 1.4 million members.
We are also one of the most effective; our members do whatever is needed to help their local communities. Everywhere we work, we make friends; with children who need eyeglasses, with seniors who don’t have enough to eat and with people we may never meet.
Lions Clubs Fit Your Lifestyle
Lions Clubs International offers a volunteer opportunity that can fit your lifestyle. Whether you are looking to lend a helping hand or pursue a leadership role, Lions has an option for you.
Being a Lion allows you to help change lives, and you can commit as much time as you wish and as your schedule allows. Volunteering your time not only helps those in need, but also gives you a sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from deep within.
Melksham Lions Club meets once a month to plan projects and conduct club business. In the summer months an additional monthly meal is organised to enable a more social dialogue to take place.
The Melksham Lions Club was formed in 1973 and Chartered in 1974
The Charter President was Stuart Beese who is now a Privileged member of the club (seen here presenting a cheque to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance). In the past years we have raised thousands of pounds, the majority of which has been fed back into the local community in one way or another; we have also contributed towards international disaster appeals through Lions Clubs International. None of the raised funds benefit the club or its members; administration of the club is covered by members’ annual subscriptions and by raffles held at the monthly meetings.
What Do Melksham Lions Do?
We support a range of local causes from the Alzheimer’s Support group to the West Wiltshire Special Needs group. On a more practical front, members have given a helping hand at events and outings for special needs children.
How Do We Raise Money?
We raise money through a range of events. Most noticeable is when we take Father Christmas on our Christmas Float to local Supermarkets at weekends in December, and, subject to having sufficient helpers we take him around many of the local developments. We also attend a range of locally run events running tombola stalls.
Why Not Join Us?
NEW MEMBERS ALWAYS WELCOME
We are a small club and new members are always welcome, even if you feel you can only offer a small amount of time or resource. Many hands make light work, and a lot more fun. Please get in touch!
We have regular monthly meetings…
Second Monday of every month, at 8pm.
The Milk Churn
You’re very welcome to come along and see what we Lions get up to at those meetings.
